South African Imports Of Textiles And Clothing From China Increased Significantly

South Africa's Economic Daily reported recently that although South Africa's imports from China fell by 15.12% in 2009, despite the financial crisis, South Africa's imports of textiles from China increased significantly due to the expiry of South Africa's textile and clothing quotas for China.

Among them, South Africa imported non knitting garments from China increased by 33.1% compared to the same period last year, and imports of knitted apparel increased by 10.34% over the same period last year.

South Africa's imports of shoes from China fell by 5.46%, while toys and sporting goods dropped by 1.52%.

South African public opinion generally agreed that South Africa's total quota policy for textiles and clothing in China from 2007 to 2008 was completely defeated. The policy did not enhance the competitiveness of the local textile industry in South Africa. On the contrary, the textile products in other Asian countries replaced Chinese products to enter the South African market. Such protectionist measures could not effectively solve the existing trade problems.
